mixing metals

Milder temperatures last weekend allowed me to continue substituting a proper winter coat with layers of vests and jackets.

I've always been curious as to whether or not you guys mix metals when it comes to jewelry. I'm not very comfortable with it - I even go so far as to match the hardware on my shoes to my jewelry - but if I can get over the fear of mismatched metals I feel like I would have more outfit options. I think this is why I'm having such a difficult time finding sandals for summer - it seems like shoes have either gold or silver accent hardware and I would like a shoe that matches both. Thoughts? Am I crazy?

  1. Great outfit. I don't like to mix metals so all the jewelry and any exposed zips I have are in gold.

  2. Fantastic outfit and those RO boots are to die for.
I don't mind mixing metals. Even my wedding ring is made of white gold with a yellow gold trim.
Although I prefer sterling silver jewelry sometimes I love to wear a stack of gold and silver bangles together. Why not?

  3. Love the outfit! I feel totally comfortable mixing metals, I even got a man's inspired stainless stell watch in a gold/silver combination to make it go with everything:)

  4. I took a tip from Rachel Zoe and started mixing my gold and silvers and I really do like it most of the time.

  5. I thought I was alone in my fear of mixing metals. I always like the look on others, but can never bring myself to actually do it.

  6. crazy? no. particular, yes. i tend to mix my metals because i don't wear a lot of jewelry so when i feel like wearing it, i often wear it all at the same time, lol. i used to be pretty anal about matching and then i realized i didn't much care and it would take me ages to find an outfit that had all of the coordinating individual pieces. now, i just throw it all on. :)
    lovely look.

  8. i love your non-winter-coat layering ideas. very inspiring for me, because i'm 100% tired of all my coats at this point.

as far as mixing metals, i don't think it is crazy to avoid it. i really REALLY hate when 1 piece of jewelry or clothing mixes silver and gold. however, i always have a mix of both on, just because there are certain rings that i'm OCD about wearing for various reasons, and while i prefer gold, there is one that is silver that i absolutely won't take off. i definitely wouldn't notice it between things like bag hardware and shoe hardware though.

  9. I feel uncomfortable to mix metals too. I even check all zippers :) That's the reason I can't start to wear gold. It'd be too confusing to wear a gold ring when a zipper on a bag is silver :) But sometimes it's just unavoidable.

  11. I feel better about it now than I used to. When I was a teen I wouldn't wear gold because of my braces! For the longest time I was stuck in that way of thinking. Now I will do it occasionally but I still prefer it all to match.

  12. I love mixing metals actually. One tone always looks too matchy-matchy to me. If you like, you can try a two-tone watch. My first watch was an old Citizen with two-tone strap that I still love.

  13. I don't mix metals at all- the only exception is a ring I got from my grandmother, but it is a combination. Not really sure why a lot of people have an issue with it- and I'm one of them.

  14. really nice outfit! I mix metals but only in the sense that I don't think too much about it. I might feel weird about mixing metals in close proximity (like a ring that doesn't match my watch). I wear a platinum ring with a silver tone watch, silver hardware on my bag, but usually wear bronze tone necklaces, and many of my shoes have bronze zippers, etc. I feel like most of the things are so far from each other, it doesn't really matter.

  15. Mixing metals is totally allowed:)My favourite danish jewellery designers who stand behind "Line&Jo", team gold and silver and it looks amazing, I am telling You.
Besides Rachel Zoe, who does it as well, cannot be mistaken:)

  16. I covet your vest. It's gorgeous. I want to like the idea of mixing medals, but I know it would irk me.

  17. I used to be hesitant as well but I think the second my mom gave me her old Rolex with the signature gold/silver combo, I quickly got over it!
