summer staple

Missoni ombre duster sweater
Kain pocket tank
AG Jeans boyfriend shorts
Chloé sandals
Margiela gold ring set

Got a bit of a 'Tobias Funke' vibe going on with these jorts, lol.
(Arrested Development - yes/no? Moving on...)

Clearly loving these Chloé sandals right now.

I love this getup, I would be perfectly happy dressing like this all summer long.

shorter days, longer nights

Well I'm back! I hope everyone had a great summer!

I feel like myself again, fashion-wise, now that the weather has turned cooler. I wouldn't rush to switch out your closets though - it looks like next weekend will be warm again.

tips and tricks

One wardrobe trick that has always worked for me is to wear skirts higher up in my waist, right at the smallest part of my torso, to make my legs look longer.

Missoni top // R.E.D. Valentino skirt // Hermes belt // Fendi bag //
Gucci watch // Giuseppe Zanotti sandals

Dolce & Gabbana silk top // vintage Christian Dior skirt // Hermes belt //
Gucci watch // Giuseppe Zanotti sandals

This skirt is so old (actually all of the clothes in this post are!) I'm so glad it still fits. The skirt is actually several layers of pleated silk. It's hard to tell from the outfit picture so here is a closeup:

Love the print!

oh stella

I love Stella McCartney's designs and I would buy more of her stuff if
1. they were not so astronomically expensive, and
2. her designs were more short-person-friendly.

To be fair, no high end designer actually caters to those of us who are 5'4" and under, but at least a lot of things can be altered to fit. This is not always the case with the majority of Stella's designs. The waist and knee breaks are always in odd places unless you're tall, so altering to fit would mean taking the whole thing apart. (She might have to address this if she plans on expanding to the fast-growing luxury Asian market.)

If I'm lucky enough to find one of her pieces on sale, most of the time I can only pull it off if I wear heels, as is the case here.

Stella McCartney shirtdress (Fisch for the Hip consignment/NYC) // Missoni espadrilles (Anbar Shoes/NYC, now closed)

This dress is trademark Stella - loose-fitting and blousy, all-natural fabric, very comfortable to wear - something a male designer would never design for a woman, lol. (Wait, I take that back - I forgot about Albert Elbaz for Lanvin!)

randoms!

here are some random outfit photos until i take some new ones, hopefully
this weekend.

some of these are really old (the chunky gray sweater should clue you in...)
"going grocery shopping/running errands" outfits. others (like the third
one down) never actually made it out the door - they were "would this outfit
work in real life?" test shots. mostly these pictures just fell through the
cracks and never got a dedicated post.

smarter shopping

this skirt is so old. i think it was my first ever mainline "orange label" Missoni piece.

JCrew tank; vintage Hermes belt; Missoni skirt; Fendi bag; Cecil & Jeanne necklace

sometimes i am amazed at what a good shopper i was back in my broke student days. most of my absolute favorite pieces in my wardrobe were purchased when i was still in college.

i realized it kind of made sense. when money was tight and i could only buy one thing every few months, i agonized over every purchase to make sure it was really worth the splurge. now that i have a larger disposable income, i don't spend as much time justifying purchases before handing over my charge card. as a result i end up with things which i don't love as much as those old standbys, and also more impulse buys.

i will try to return to my smarter shopping self. i am still very good at bargain hunting but there is always room for improvement.

summer white

when it comes to "things i do not look forward to every season," donning tight white jeans is right up there with putting on a bikini for the first time after a long winter. for some reason light-colored denim is not as forgiving as black or darker-wash denim.

Photobucket

but i happen to love the look of crisp white jeans so every spring i take a deep breath and pray that i still fit into them. i usually wear a loose-fitting top and heels to make me feel less squat.

Photobucket

i get less self-conscious and less traumatized after the first couple of wears and as the season progresses white jeans become a wardrobe staple for me.

it's always a plus when you can walk out of the house feeling like you're wearing a comfy set of pajamas.

Photobucket

i completely forgot to mention that i bought these pants during my abbreviated Easter weekend shopping trip - probably because they've been sitting in my weekender bag, which has yet to be fully unpacked since Easter...

supersize it

this sweater is so big i have trouble making it work sometimes. unfortunately Missoni, and knits in general, are practically impossible to alter well. i should resist the temptation to buy items in the wrong size just to take advantage of a great discount. ::sigh::

Photobucket

and this bag looks much larger in pictures than it does in my hands - must be my napoleon complex. i love it though!

it came with an extra-long strap, a shorter strap...

... and you can take off the attachments altogether to turn it into an oversized clutch.

snow day!!!

first real snow day of the season! it looks like we'll be getting at least 3 inches today. i certainly hope businesses are open, i've got a ton of errands to run.

Photobucket

i love this wool onesie! i've been wanting one but didn't want to spend a lot of money on it because it's such a specific look. i found this one on sale at intermixonline.com, and you can take an extra 40% off the sale price with code "sale40" (note that it is final sale.) it's a fine merino wool, not at all itchy or cheap-looking, and it is so comfortable. i can't wait to play around with it (i'll be checking out alexander wang's fall looks for some ideas), but for now here's how i'm wearing it - nothing like piling on a bunch of cosy layers when it's snowing out!

Photobucket

ITEMS (rollover mouse to view detailed picture)
Prada mohair vest (old, from eBay)
Portolano extra-long cashmere scarf (old, from Filene's Basement/NYC)

Missoni ombre cardigan (from Filene's Basement/NYC)
Soixante Neuf tusk necklace (very old, from small boutique in NYC)

sweater coats

for some reason the weather in philadelphia feels a bit milder than in new york. perhaps because the buildings aren't as tall there aren't as many wind tunnels? call me crazy, but the cold has a little less "bite" here in philly. perfect weather for sweater coats! with temperatures hovering in the 50s and 60s, i have yet to break out a coat. with just a few layers of silk jersey or cashmere (both lightweight fabrics that keep you warm), i can get away with wearing a chunky sweater as my outermost layer. i also throw in a scarf for added warmth, but often find myself unwinding it and sticking it in my bag, especially when the sun is out...

Helmut Lang (by Helmut Lang) pants (from Tokio7/NYC); Rick Owens Lilies zip-up (from Century21/NYC); Rick Owens combo open cardigan (old, from net-a-porter.com sale); Alaia studded boots (from Bergdorf Goodman clearance); Ann Demeulemeester scarf (from aloharag.com); Elizabeth & James knuckle ring (from Intermix/NYC)

Missoni cardigan (from Filene's Basement/NYC); Autumn Cashmere shirttail hem sweater (from revolveclothing.com); Kier+J cashmere leggings; Chloe pull-on boots (from DSW Shoes/NYC); extra-long scarf made from two Portolano cashmere scarves from Filene's Basement; Ann Demeulemeester scarf (from aloharag.com); Elizabeth & James knuckle ring (from Intermix/NYC)

now that this blog has been up and running for a couple of seasons, you may have noticed that i use the same items over and over again. i don't like to amass tons of clothing and would rather have a few key pieces than a closet bursting at the seams, so i apologize for the repetition! sometimes it's difficult but i try to resist the temptation of buying clothes for the sake of showing something new on the blog. i will continue to add new pieces here and there, but until then be prepared to see a lot of familiar items!

i got the idea to layer two scarves from Siena Fleming on stylelikeu, it's quite ingenious and something that i'll be doing quite often from now on. i want more scarves! maybe that ought to be my shopping focus this winter...

sunday, september 27th '09

last sunday as i was getting dressed watching the downpour through my window i thought up a haiku:

rain rain go away
so the Yankees play and win
clinch the A. L. East

haha, dorky i know. (they did end up winning though.)

back to what i was wearing...

Photobucket

some of you might remember the scarf i "made" (ok, not really, i just sewed two together to make a really long one) from last winter. took quite a bit of digging but i did find it. in the end i had to take it off, it was warmer than expected. it was also the debut of these cool $3.00 rings with latin sayings on them, which i purchased at the "marc jacobs store of random cheap accessories" on bleecker & perry in the village.

ITEMS (rollover mouse to view detailed picture)
extra long scarf made from two Portolano cashmere scarves (from Filene's Basement)
vintage tee (from unis in nolita)
Les Chiffoniers ankle-length pants (from last winter's Intermix warehouse sale)
Miu Miu motorcycle boots (old, from mytheresa.com)
vintage leather jacket (from eBay)
Marc Jacobs Latin rings (from Marc Jacobs accessories store in the Village)
Bliss Lau body harness (from blisslau.com)

i went shopping for an ivory shrug for an upcoming black-tie event but didn't find exactly what i was looking for. i did pick up a couple of missoni pieces from filene's basement though. here i am in the dressing room, trying on a fabulous sweater that i ended up buying:

the missoni skirt so carelessly thrown on the floor also came home with me. (don't worry, i'm not one of those brats who leave messy rooms behind!)

saturday, july 25th '09

saturday day: drove upstate to woodbury commons premium outlets. it was a huge disappointment, but at least i got to practice my highway driving. the barneys outlet was the biggest disappointment for me, they had one small rack of designer things and everything else was stuff from co-op. neiman's last call and saks off fifth also yielded nothing. i wanted belts from the balenciaga and gucci outlets but they didn't have my size. i did not leave empty-handed, i did buy some basic tops for work from the polo outlet, but all in all i wish i had stayed in the city instead.

Photobucket

saturday night: got back to the city in time for dinner, changed my clothes but kept the same accessories so i was in and out in less than twenty minutes! i think this dress (which i bought for $63 on clearance from filene's basement) is actually a top... oh well! when it's hot and humid and you're as short as i am it's a little more acceptable i hope.

Photobucket

ITEMS (rollover mouse to view detailed picture):
day: Mark & Estel kimono sleeve top (from markandestel.com), Paige frayed denim shorts, Ralph Lauren belt (from Marshall's), (on both outfits) Cecile & Jeanne gold cuff (from Cecile & Jeanne boutique on Madison Ave.), Giuseppe Zanotti jewelled thong sandals (old, from Bergdorf Goodman clearance)

night: Missoni top worn as minidress (from Filene's Basement), vintage snakeskin belt (from Housing Works thrift shop on Columbus Ave.)

transitioning

while i'm glad that summer hasn't been completely washed out with rain, it's usually around this time that i start looking forward to fall and cooler weather. i miss my jackets, scarves, and wearing more than one layer of clothing. it's also a good time for me to think about pieces that i can transition into fall.

so i finally found a romper that doesn't make me look like a 10 year-old. here's how i wore it on my short beach holiday:

Stella McCartney romper (from yoox sale); Missoni espadrilles (fron Anbar Shoes on Reade St.); Cecile et Jeanne gold cufff (from Cecile et Jeanne boutique on Madison Ave.); flea market necklace

i've been toying with the idea of throwing a blazer or even a sweater over it when cooler weather rolls around; not sure how successful it is in this particular example:

Stella McCartney romper (from yoox sale); Balenciaga boyfriend blazer (from eBay); Office London boots (from Topshop NY); street vendor scarf

but i think with a little more experimenting i might come up with some clever ideas. i thought it might even look cute with leggings or tights.

now what i really miss during the warmer months are my leather pants. i wish i could comfortably wear leather pants when it's hot and humid outside, it would be so hot (figuratively and unfortunately literally) with just a simple rib tank.

Rick Owens rib tank (from Barneys clearance); Balenciaga.Leather pants (old, from yoox); Soixante Neuf tusk necklace (old, from a little boutique i'm not sure exists anymore)

alas, i will have to wait until fall to break them out again.

i think the music in the cab ride home was better than at brass monkey, but
really strong beer craving + proximity to pastis where we had dinner (is it weird that they always ask if you want french fries? i mean, i ordered a salad) + no cover = brass monkey
